“The One Environmental Issue” – Editorial – January 1, 2008

The Times could not have selected a more appropriate lead editorial for the first day of 2008! There are many reasons the environment has not been a major issue in recent presidential campaigns. The candidates do not want to deal with the cost issues, and are afraid the solutions, like a carbon “cap and trade” program will be impossible for most voters to understand. The Republicans, who have controlled the White House and Congress for much of the past decade, have zero interest in any program that will reduce profits for their huge supporters in the oil and gas and automobile industries. But most of all it is the lack of coverage, until recently, by the media, and the apathy of the American people that have stalled almost any attempt to reduce our collective carbon footprint.

Your editorial states that it will “require more courage of the candidates…..” and, “the voters deserve an honest accounting….” I implore the Times to continue to make climate change a front page issue throughout this campaign and beyond.
