“Unfinished Debate on Iraq” – Editorial – January 13, 2008

The 2008 election campaign has produced the most striking differences between Democrats and Republicans in decades, but the most important difference between the two parties is Iraq. While the Republicans are staking their bets that the “surge” will be successful and take the war in Iraq off the front burner, the Democrats are denouncing the war carefully because they do not want to appear weak on the issue of terrorism.

Lately the financial condition of the country has taken center stage as the daily headlines shift from Bush’s immoral war to the disaster the President has created with respect to our economy. But American troops are still dying and being maimed in that hell hole, and the Iraqi government seems more than content to sit safely in the Green Zone and wait for us to leave before making Iraq a Shiite State and an ally of Iran. The “surge” will ultimately fail and Iraq will again become the central issue in the race for President. Any candidate who voted for this war, or supports Bush’s mismanagement of it has no chance in the debate, or for the White House.
