“Let It Start Now” – Editorial – January 4, 2008
The significance of the victories for Barack Obama and Mike Huckabee are stunning in very different ways. Senator Obama won in an almost exclusively white State, while Governor Huckabee counted on his core base of evangelicals and born-again Christians to defeat Mitt Romney who outspent him by five or six to one! Voters in Iowa sent very clear messages that may well resonate around the country: They want change and they want candidates with strong values and integrity. Both Huckabee and Obama conform to those criteria.
The striking difference between Obama and Huckabee on Thursday night was their speeches to their supporters. Huckabee was corny and wishy-washy, while Obama was passionate, strikingly heartfelt and evocative of his amazing keynote address at the 2004 Democratic National Convention. “It” has finally started, and if Iowa was any indication of what we are in store for in New Hampshire and beyond, I say hooray! Goodbye to the politics of fear and deception, and welcome to the new breed of politicians preaching hope and values for America.
