“Of Two Minds on Polar Bears” – Editorial – January 2, 2008

It is ashamedly far too late to save the polar bears. With the rate of ice melt at the poles and in Greenland, these wonderful creatures will be extinct in my lifetime. The fact that the Bush administration has not acted to save the polar bears until now has sealed their fate, and sealed George W. Bush’s legacy as a true enemy of the environment.

Female polar bears have started to lose huge amounts of body weight and are giving birth to undersized cubs. Males are starting to mate with brown bears in areas where they cohabitate. No matter what the Bush flunky Kempthorne does it will be too little, too late, and another precious species will vanish from planet earth. The Fish and Wildlife Service should list polar bears as endangered, and Congress should prohibit the Minerals Management Service to sell oil leases in the polar bear’s range. We need to make every attempt to keep these magnificent animals alive as long as possible.
