A Vote for Justice” – Op/Ed – November 6, 2007
A vote of cowardice from Mr. Schumer! As a long-time resident of New York I have supported Charles Schumer for most of his career. That support ends today. I know that Senator Schumer is aware of many more suitable candidates than Mr. Mukasey. Could the fact that the Senator’s wife was a former Mukasey employee have anything to do with his vote?
Senator Schumer is also a brilliant lawyer, and he surely understands Mr. Mukasey’s predicament. If the Justice comes out and says that water-boarding is torture, and therefore illegal, he de-facto states that the President broke the law by condoning that awful, immoral practice. Mr. Schumer has also been around long enough to know that torture by America, in any form, will make our enemies hate us even more, and put our own soldiers at serious risk of being tortured if they are captured.
I hope Mr. Schumer gets to read this so that he will know that there are many Democrat’s who will be working very hard to find a replacement for him when his term is up.
