Sen Obama was appearing at Google today. Unfortunately it was late in the afternoon and I was tied up in a high-level program review. There are numerous photos of the visit on Yahoo! newsfeed. I spoke with some Googlers who went and saw him. Said he was very charismatic, very polished, very charming...and totally in touch with the audience -- in this case a bunch of geeks. For example, he talked about the need for the United States to have a CTO, someone who served as the top advisor on technology to the President. And how the US needed to lead the world in leveraging and innovating technology. And of course he talked about how people at Google represented the best ideals of America, to make the best products and lead the world, and how we needed more of that....yadda yadda yadda. What a suck-up job! We loved it. ;-)
In the end our CEO, Eric Schmidt, told Sen Obama that visiting Google was sort of a job interview, and that he would have to answer some typical Google job interview questions. Barack said "Okay...ask away". And then our CEO asked Sen Obama -- "what's the best way to sort a million 32 bit random numbers in only 64K of memory?" Well, of course, that just brought a thunderous round of laughter, as it's typical of the technical (and arcane) questions that the Engineers get asked during an interview.
After the laughter died down, Barack said ....."Actually, I'd like to take a stab at it. I know this much, you wouldn't want to use a bubble sort". Well...hilarity ensued. The place practically erupted in riots. Not since the premier of "The Rites of Spring" have men been given to such emotional upheavals. :-)
P.S. wikipedia -- see "bubble sorts".
